xtul: A PAVILLION AT HAWKMOOR HOSPITAL

A WORD IN EXPLANATION

Xtul is a little village on the Yucatan coast of Mexico. In 1966 thirty members of the Process Church of the Final Judgement settled there for a while, and during a hurricane wrote their most profound piece of neotheologising. Four years later, on the other side of the world I fell in love with a book by an eccentric English aristocrat, who based the 13 year old heroine on his eldest daughter, who ended up in Yucatan with The Process when the book and I were both seven years old. Forty years after I first read the book my dog bit February Callender, and a whole sequence of events was put into progress.

Xtul is a process. Well, it would be wouldn’t it? Many Gods, no masters, to subvert a saying or two.

Xtul is a performance piece with no fixed performers, a nucleus of vaguely evolved higher primates who influence each other’s dynamic and take the performance to places no-one has dreamed.

Xtul is a cripple with the head of an elephant

Xtul is a place deep in the woods where the truth can sometimes dare to go naked. But truth is, as Pontius Pilate knew, a highly subjective concept. 30-4-13-7-40. The omniverse is ruled by numbers, but who rules the numbers

Xtul is what happens when chaos rules her own brand of evolution.

Xtul is a schoolgirl dressed as a usually priapic, but unusually gender-neutral Hellenic deity, and a madman with a mission.

Xtul is a story spread across many platforms and taking many forms; a story with rules, a beginning and an end, although no-one involves actually knows what any of them are.

Xtul is a woodland ritual writing itself, and is as unpredictable as are all arcane steps into Holy Magick. The Green Woods Laugh? I wouldn’t go that far.
